Health Coaching

What Is Health Coaching?

Health coaching effectively motivates behavior change through a structured, supportive partnership between you and a health coach. The coach helps facilitate insights and clarity through inquiry and personal discovery.

Coaching provides an opportunity for you, in collaboration with an experienced coach, to determine the kind of life you really want to live. A health coach is like a "personal trainer" for the whole self.

  • Through coaching, you are empowered to reach your highest level of health.
  • Health coaching helps connect personal values to the importance of achieving a healthier life.
  • Health coaches support you in tracking your weekly progress and hold you accountable to your commitments.
  • The coach works with you to create and sustain a mindset needed to make lifestyle changes.
  • The coach works in partnership with you to identify obstacles to change and create strategies for forward movement.
  • Coaching is not about criticism or judgment. Criticism has no place in developing personal awareness and working to achieve goals.
  • Coaches provide additional resources for making healthy behavior changes.

We Offer:

  • A personal health plan that meets your unique needs as you continue to evolve
  • Support and a coach's input to set your personal health goals and hold you accountable for meeting those goals
  • A coach's help you to create and meet a specific goal such as weight loss, smoking cessation, increasing exercise or stress reduction

How Our Health Coaching Works

One hour initial health coaching session (on phone or in person): If this session is on the phone, you will call your health coach at the agreed upon time. If the session is scheduled as a face-to-face visit, you and your coach will meet at Duke Integrative Medicine.

Creation of personal health plan: The personalized health planning session involves developing your health vision as well as your long-term goals and the action steps that will help you reach those goals.

Follow-up sessions: Our trained coaches use innovative and practical strategies to help you explore creative options and enhance personal accountability. Follow-up sessions are usually conducted over the phone and last between 30-45 minutes.
